ABOUT US

Hello fellow fossil preparators, welcome to PaleoTools, "The World of Advanced Preparation Technology", done with you in mind. We are constantly striving to improve and develop new tools that will be helpful to you. Your ideas become our future tools. We are glad that we have been able to advance the art of fossil preparation.

My wife, Jane & I have worked on fossil preparation for years and grew weary of the poor selection and poorer reliability of the tips for the pneumatic engraving tools at our disposal. We were working specifically with the Chicago Pneumatic and became very frustrated with the stylus (tips) that were sold with the CP. That became the spring board for our business. Sound familiar??

I decided that there had to be a way to build a solid tungsten carbide stylus for the CP, and while I was at it, I knew longer tips would be invaluable. Luckily, I am an engineer by trade, so the task became a fun challenge. Our new tips with a new bushing for the CP were introduced at SVP in 1998 at Snowbird, Utah. They were an instant success. The tips last forever, (almost) and the bushing has been designed with a close tolerance hole for the stylus, thereby, eliminating the "slop" and allowing for much more precise work to be done.

Many of you came by our booth in 1998 and made suggestions - styluses for the Ingersol Rand & ARO tools (extended styluses, too); solid carbide needles to go in pin vises; a muffler for the CP. These suggestions became the ideas for future research & development and led to many new products. We also appreciate the willingness with which many of you tested our "Proto-types" and gave us feed back regarding performance. Thank You!!!

Our latest development seems to be something the paleontology world has needed for many years - a pneumatic tool to remove the hard, thick matrix surrounding bones in large jackets, but not doing any damage to the bones themselves (unlike the pistol grip air chisels). The PaleoTools Mighty Jack - The Mother of all air scribes. (This idea also came from a customer’s request.) Next came the "Micro-Jack" series. This came about because a friend of mine ask one day, "Bill, can you build me an airscribe that I can use under a microscope?".

On a personal note, we live in Utah, about 45 miles north of Salt Lake City. Our business is located a further 20 miles north in Brigham City.

I do much of the production and all of the quality control myself. If you don’t love our products, I want to know why. No one has ever returned a tool to us or asked for a refund. I am always looking for new ideas and will work with you if you have special requests.

We look forward to working with you,

Bill and Jane Murray
